MADE IN THE USA

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is specifically designed for use in racing, tuning, and testing applications. Made in the USA from superior materials. The Exposed Tip sensing junction provides immediate response to dynamic temperature changes.

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Probe is capable of surviving extreme vibration and heat up to 2300 degrees F (1300 degrees C). The EGT probe will fit most internal combustion engine exhaust systems from approximately .750 inch diameter up to about 4 inch diameter with nominal installation modifications. The EGT probe is 0.187" diameter (4.75 mm) with a 90-degree bend to accommodate tight mounting locations. An adjustable (316 Stainless Steel) 1/8" NPT compression fitting adapter is included. The EGT probe cable lead length is 6 feet (1.8 meters) or 12 feet (3.6 meters).

The probe cable is over-braided in stainless steel for heavy-duty abrasion resistance. The signal wires are FEP insulated. Designed to deliver high performance, high temperature measurements, reliably and consistently.

These high temperature sensors are the choice for professional racing teams, R&D test labs, and enthusiasts. The EGT probes can be used for many different applications, including Karts, Drag Racing, Formula 1, NASCAR, Off Road, Snowmobiles, Aviation, and Marine Racing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please confirm with your instrument manufacturer that the instrument is compatible with a Type K thermocouple sensor.

APPLICATIONS AND TECHNICAL DETAILS

The 3/16" EGT-EP: The Standard-Duty General-Purpose EGT Probe

The 3/16" EGT-EP is The Sensor Connection’s most broadly specified gasoline EGT probe, and for good reason: it sits at the practical center of the application range. At 3/16" (4.75 mm) diameter, it is robust enough for pre-turbo placement and high-velocity exhaust environments where smaller 1/8" probes face fatigue risk, while remaining small enough to minimize flow disruption in performance exhaust systems.

The 90-degree bend geometry is the standard configuration for radial pipe wall installation — the format used in the majority of racing and high-performance automotive EGT applications.

250-Millisecond Response and What It Means for Tuning

The exposed-tip junction provides a 250 millisecond response time (time constant), allowing the probe to track real-time changes in exhaust gas temperature.

Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.

At 6000 RPM, a four-stroke engine completes a combustion event approximately every 20 milliseconds. While the probe does not resolve individual combustion events, it responds quickly enough to track changes in mixture quality, load, and throttle position across multiple cycles — the relevant timescale for tuning.

This allows the user to monitor EGT trends during a power sweep, identify peak temperature conditions associated with optimal air-fuel ratio, and detect temperature drops that may indicate lean-out conditions at high RPM.

3/16" as the Pre-Turbo Minimum

The Sensor Connection recommends 3/16" or larger probes for pre-turbocharger installations. Upstream of the turbine wheel, exhaust gas velocity is at its highest, creating dynamic loading on the probe tip that results in a cyclic bending moment at the compression fitting.

Smaller 1/8" probes can be susceptible to fatigue under these conditions. The 3/16" diameter provides the additional stiffness required for reliable long-term operation in high-velocity exhaust streams. For post-turbo applications, smaller diameters may be acceptable.

Industrial, Aviation, and Power Generation Applications

Beyond motorsports, the 3/16" EGT-EP is used in a wide range of applications, including aviation piston engine monitoring, gas turbine diagnostics, combustion research, and industrial process heating systems.

The exposed junction design is intended for clean-burning fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, and alcohol blends, where contamination of the sensing junction is minimal.

Compression Fitting and Installation

The probe includes a 316 stainless steel adjustable compression fitting with 1/8"-27 NPT threads, allowing installation in a standard tapped port.

Maximum insertion depth is 1.1 inches, and typical placement positions the probe tip within the exhaust flow region without excessive intrusion.

The 90-degree geometry allows for some tolerance in installation angle, simplifying mounting in complex exhaust systems compared to straight probe designs.
