Installation Information Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Probe placement in the exhaust path requires special attention. If it is closer than 1½ inches to the cylinder head, probe life will be limited, too far away the probe will be less responsive.

Probe Locations
The installation position of an EGT probe is important and requires planning in your diesel engine application.
Installation locations in turbo and non-turbo engines are different for EGT probes and require consideration. ITS-90 Table for type J thermocoupleFor Type J thermocouples, the output voltage increases almost linearly to the temperature difference over a bounded range of temperatures. For precise measurements, non-linearity must be corrected. The nonlinear relationship between the temperature difference and the output voltage (mV) of a thermocouple can be corrected using the table below.
What is a Thermocouple?Thermocouples are the most common sensor used for exhaust gas temperature measuring. Consisting of a pair of dissimilar metal wires joined at one end, producing a net thermoelectric voltage when measured between the open pair.
