How can I Identify if my EGT or CHT Sensor is a Type K or TypeJ Thermocouple?

How to identify Thermocouple Probe types for your application

The easiest way to identify your sensor thermocouple type is to look at the colors of the wire jacket insulation.

Type K
Yellow (+ leg)
Red (- leg)

Type J
White (+ leg)
Red (- leg)

But in some cases, the wire jacket insulation has been stripped away or is frayed & the colors are not obvious. In this instance, you can use a magnet to help determine the thermocouple type

Type K
+ leg (chromel) = non-magnetic
- leg (alumel) = magnetic

Type J
+ leg (iron) = magnetic
- leg (constantan) = non-magnetic

Note:  Depending on the strength of your magnet, you may have to snip a piece off the wire from each leg of the cable to see if it sticks to your magnet.
