Tips for proper installation of EGT Thermocouple Probe Sensors
Not inserting the EGT Probe tip completely into the center of the exhaust stream can result in low EGT temperature readings.
After installing our Marine Series EGT Digital Pyrometer Kit on their boat a customer called to ask why their EGT temperature readings were hundreds of degrees below expected. They were reading 157 °F@ idle, 184 °F @ 1000 rpm, and 213 °F @ 1500 rpm.
We recommended our customer start with the usual suspects, including:
They had inserted the EGT probe into the fitting to a depth of 2". Since they had an exhaust pipe diameter of 4" then this would put the tip of the probe into the center of the exhaust stream (which is the correct depth). The issue was that the compression fitting is 1.3" tall, after inserting 2" into the fitting then only about 0.7" of the probe was protruding into the exhaust stream.
We recommended loosening up the compression fitting & pushing the EGT probe in an additional 1.3". Our customer responded back that this solved the issue & the EGT temperatures are right on the money.

- Checking the probe's wire polarity to the pyrometer gauge (the polarity was correct)
- Confirming that the pyrometer gauge was configured for a Type K thermocouple input (it was)
- Looking for shorts or wire breaks in the cable (looked good upon inspection)

The issue was that the compression fitting is 1.3" tall, after inserting 2" into the fitting then only about 0.7" of the probe was protruding into the exhaust stream.
