Product Overview (Archived Reference)
The APG-SD + EGT-DF kit combined:
- 2-1/16" analog pyrometer gauge
- Type K diesel EGT probe
The gauge displayed temperature on a 100–600°C range, optimized specifically for diesel exhaust conditions.
Why Diesel EGT Uses a Different Range
Diesel engines operate with excess air, which lowers exhaust temperatures compared to gasoline engines.
Typical diesel EGT:
- Approximately 400–650°C under load
- Higher values indicate over-fueling or excessive load
A diesel-specific gauge spreads this range across the full scale, improving readability and making temperature trends easier to detect.
APG-SD Gauge Design
Stepper Motor Analog Movement
The APG-SD uses a stepper motor-driven needle.
Compared to traditional analog movements:
- No mechanical return spring
- Reduced sensitivity to vibration
- Calibration controlled electronically
This improves durability and long-term stability in motorsports and industrial environments.
Backlighting and Alarm
- White LED backlight
- Red LED alarm indicator
The alarm activates when temperature exceeds a programmed setpoint, providing immediate visual warning.
Accuracy
- ±3% of full scale
- Equivalent to approximately ±15°C across the range
This is appropriate for engine protection monitoring.
EGT-DF Probe
Construction
- Type K thermocouple
- Inconel 600 sheath
- MgO insulation
- Enclosed, ungrounded junction
This design protects the sensing junction from soot, fuel residues, and chemical exposure common in diesel exhaust.
Performance
- Response time: 550 ms (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.
The enclosed design prioritizes durability over maximum response speed.
Probe Specifications
- Diameter: 1/8" (0.125")
- Temperature range: -148 to 2372°F (-100 to 1300°C)
- Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
- Sheath: Inconel 600
- Cable: Stainless overbraid with Teflon-insulated conductors, 20 AWG
- Compression fitting: 316 SS, adjustable, 1/8"-27 NPT
Probe Placement
Pre-Turbo (Preferred)
- Measures highest exhaust temperature
- Best for engine protection
Post-Turbo
- Lower readings due to heat loss through the turbine
- Slower response
Wiring
Type K polarity must be observed:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Incorrect polarity results in inverted readings.
Applications
- Diesel race trucks and sled pull
- Marine diesel engines
- Performance diesel builds
- Industrial diesel systems
Summary
The APG-SD + EGT-DF kit provided a durable, diesel-specific solution for exhaust temperature monitoring.
- Diesel-optimized temperature range
- Stepper motor analog gauge
- Enclosed-junction probe for long service life
- Adjustable compression fitting for installation flexibility
