Guidelines How to Install EGT Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor

Thank you for choosing Harold G Schaevitz Industries – The Sensor Connection.

This video reviews important guidelines and considerations when installing an EGT exhaust gas temperature sensor.

Please keep in mind that these guidelines are purely recommendations – be sure to consult the engine manufacturer or a professional engine builder before proceeding with EGT probe installation. Also wear safety glasses.

It is generally recommended to install EGT’s in the exhaust manifold about 2 to 4 inches from the cylinder head. There are four main methods of EGT probe installation:

1. Drill & Tap method

Step 1: Drill the manufacturer’s recommended hole size
Step 2: Then tap the appropriate thread size
Step 3: Next Thread in the probe’s compression fitting then insert the probe into the compression fitting

2. Weld Bung & Compression Fitting

Step 1: Drill the manufacturer’s recommended hole size
Step 2: Then weld the bung into place
Step 3: Next Thread in the probe’s compression fitting into the weld bung then insert the probe into the compression fitting

3. Direct Weld Compression Fitting

Step 1: Drill the manufacturer’s recommended hole size
Step 2: Then weld the fitting into place
Step 3: Then insert the probe into the Direct Weld Compression Fitting

4. Muffler Clamp

Step 1: Drill the manufacturer’s recommended hole size
Step 2: Tighten the clamp in place
Step 3: Then insert the probe through the clamp’s fitting Be sure to carefully clean all metal filings from the exhaust manifold after drilling.

EGT’s are typically set at a depth so the tip of the probe is at the center of the exhaust stream. The proper procedure for tightening the compression fitting nut is specified using the rotation of the nut as the key metric, rather than torque •

For 1/16” to 3/16” outer diameter probes turn the nut 3/4 of a full turn past finger tight

For 1/4” outer diameter probes turn the nut 1-1/4 turns past finger tight

For reassembly after initial installation turn 1/4 of a full turn past finger tight It is important to route the EGT probe cables perpendicular the exhaust tubes to avoid damaging the cable’s insulation due to overheating.

Please keep in mind that these guidelines are recommendations – be sure to consult the engine manufacturer or a professional engine builder before proceeding with EGT probe installation.
