About MPG-4C: 4-Channel Digital EGT and/or CHT Pyrometer Gauge
The MPG-4C monitors four thermocouple channels simultaneously on a single 2-1/4" color LCD gauge. Each channel can be independently configured for EGT or CHT, assigned its own alarm setpoint, and labeled to match the specific sensor installed.
Five user-selectable display screen layouts control how the four readings are organized and presented. The gauge accepts Type K, J, and E thermocouples, fits a 57mm round panel cutout, and operates on 8–30 VDC.
Probes are not included — the MPG-4C is a gauge-only SKU, sold separately from TSC’s EGT and CHT sensor lineup.
Why 4 Channels Changes What You Can See
The step up from a 2-channel to a 4-channel instrument is not simply about adding more probes—it changes what diagnostic questions you can answer in a single glance.
A 2-channel gauge tells you whether a measured pair of cylinders is in balance and within range. A 4-channel gauge across a 4-cylinder engine shows the thermal distribution across the entire combustion event—identifying which cylinder is leading, which is lagging, and whether any outlier is developing in isolation.
That whole-engine picture is the primary reason to choose the MPG-4C over multiple 2-channel gauges.
Color LCD vs. LED Digit Displays: The Core Design Difference
The DPG-SD and DPG-XR gauges use LED digit displays—bright, high-contrast numeric readouts that are easy to read in direct sunlight and visible at a glance from across a cockpit.
The MPG-4C and MPG-12C use graphic color LCD displays with backlighting. Understanding the tradeoffs between these display technologies helps confirm whether the MPG-4C is the right choice for a specific installation.
| Feature | MPG-4C Color LCD | DPG-XR LED Digits |
|---|---|---|
| Information density | High — 4 labeled channels, alarm indicators, and status on one screen | Moderate — 2 numeric readings |
| Sunlight readability | Good with backlight; may wash out in extreme direct sun | Excellent |
| Night readability | Adjustable backlight; softer on night vision | Bright, high-contrast |
| Channel identification | Labels shown next to readings | Position-based |
| Alarm indication | Channel changes to red | LED alert + relay output |
| Display configurability | 5 user-selectable layouts | Fixed format |
| Mixed sensor use | Fully labeled EGT/CHT per channel | No on-screen labeling |
Five Display Screen Layouts
The MPG-4C stores five user-configurable display layouts selectable via front panel controls.
All-Channel Simultaneous View
The primary operating screen shows all four channels simultaneously. Each channel is labeled and visible at once, allowing quick comparison across all sensors. When an alarm triggers, the affected channel changes to red for immediate identification.
Paired Channel Views
Two channels are displayed prominently, with secondary channels still visible. Useful when two measurements are of primary interest.
Single-Channel Focus View
Displays one channel at full size for maximum readability. Useful for focused diagnostics.
Peak Hold Recall View
Displays maximum recorded temperatures for all channels. Peak data is stored in non-volatile memory and retained after power cycles.
Per-Channel Configuration
EGT / CHT Labeling
Each channel is independently labeled to match the installed sensor type, ensuring clarity during operation.
Independent Alarm Setpoints
Each channel has its own programmable high-temperature alarm threshold.
Thermocouple Type Selection
Supports Type K, J, and E thermocouples, with independent configuration per channel
Alarm Output: Open-Collector vs Relay
The MPG-4C uses an open-collector NPN transistor output.
When the alarm triggers:
- The output switches to ground (pulls the signal low)
Key characteristics:
- Maximum current: 0.25A DC
- Requires external power for connected devices
This output is ideal for:
- Logic-level inputs
- External relays (with proper interface)
- Indicator lights or buzzers
It is not intended to directly drive high-current loads.
Accuracy
- ±5°F (±2.8°C) typical across the full range
This absolute accuracy can be tighter than proportional full-scale specifications within the typical EGT operating range. For most applications, relative temperature differences between channels are the most important diagnostic factor.
Panel Mounting
- 57mm (2-1/4") round cutout
- Supports front or rear mounting configurations
This differs from the 52mm cutout used by DPG-series gauges and should be confirmed before installation.
Power and Wiring
Power Supply
- 8–30 VDC input
- Current draw varies with backlight level
Thermocouple Inputs
Each channel requires a dedicated thermocouple pair.
Type K polarity:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Correct polarity must be maintained for accurate readings.
Applications
4-Cylinder Engines
Provides full-cylinder EGT monitoring in a single gauge.
Mixed EGT and CHT Installations
Supports combined sensor types with clear labeling and independent alarms.
Turbocharged Engines
Suitable for monitoring pre-turbo EGT or combined EGT/CHT setups.
V8 Engines
Covers selected cylinders or one bank. For full coverage, use MPG-12C.
