About - KIT-MPG-4C+EGT-EP: 4-Channel EGT Pyrometer Kit — Gas Race Series

This kit pairs four EP Series exposed-junction EGT probes with the MPG-4C 4-channel color LCD pyrometer gauge, providing a complete solution for instrumenting all four exhaust runners on a 4-cylinder engine and displaying all temperatures simultaneously on a single 2-1/4" gauge.

Configuration options at checkout include:

  • Cable length per probe (6, 12, or 25 feet)
  • Weld bung material (none, mild steel, or stainless steel)
  • Engine type (gasoline or diesel)

The diesel option substitutes DP Series sheathed probes for the EP Series exposed probes, reflecting the different requirements of diesel exhaust environments.

What’s Included

  • EGT Probes (4×)
EP Series, Type K, exposed ungrounded junction, Inconel sheath, 3/16" diameter, stainless overbraid/PTFE cable, 316 SS compression fitting
  • MPG-4C Gauge (1×)
4-channel color LCD pyrometer, 57mm panel mount, 8–30 VDC
  • Compression Fittings (4×)
    316 SS double-ferrule, 1/8"-27 NPT
  • Weld Bungs (optional)
    Mild steel or stainless
  • Thermocouple connectors

EP vs DP Probes: Why the Sensor Changes

EP Series (Gasoline Applications)

The EP probe uses an exposed, ungrounded thermocouple junction placed directly in the exhaust gas stream. This provides very fast response to temperature changes.

  • Response Time: 250 ms (time constant)
  • Direct gas exposure → rapid thermal response
  • Best suited for clean combustion environments

Compatible fuels:

  • Gasoline
  • Natural gas
  • Nitrous-assisted combustion
  • Methanol / ethanol / E85

DP Series (Diesel Applications)

The DP probe encloses the junction inside the sheath to protect it from particulate contamination.

  • Response Time: ~1200 ms (time constant)
  • Slower but more stable
  • Designed for harsh exhaust environments

Diesel exhaust can degrade exposed junctions over time due to particulate and chemical exposure.

Response Time Explained

Response time is defined as the time required for the probe to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change

Multiple time constants are required for full stabilization.

EP Probe Specifications

  • Type: K thermocouple
  • Temperature Range: -148 to 2372°F (-100 to 1300°C)
  • Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
  • Diameter: 3/16"
  • Junction: Exposed, ungrounded
  • Response Time: 250 ms
  • Sheath: Inconel
  • Cable: Stainless overbraid, PTFE insulated, 20 AWG
  • Compression Fitting: 316 SS, 1/8"-27 NPT
  • Max Insertion Depth: 1.1"

Cable Length Selection

Choose based on actual routing distance—not straight-line measurement.

LengthTypical Use
6 ftShort installs, engine bay mounting
12 ftMost front-engine car installations
25 ftLong runs (rear engine, marine, aircraft)

Use only thermocouple-grade extension wire—never copper.

Probe Placement

  • Install 2–4 inches from exhaust valve
  • Use consistent placement across all cylinders
  • Position probe near center of exhaust flow
  • Avoid pipe wall contact

Consistent placement ensures accurate cylinder-to-cylinder comparison.

Thermocouple Wiring

  • Type K polarity:
    • Yellow = Positive (+)
    • Red = Negative (–)

Incorrect polarity results in inaccurate readings.

MPG-4C Gauge Overview

  • 4-channel simultaneous display
  • Color LCD with 5 layouts
  • Per-channel alarm setpoints
  • Open-collector alarm output (0.25A)
  • Independent thermocouple type per channel
  • 8–30 VDC operation

Applications

  • 4-cylinder gasoline race engines
  • Turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines
  • Nitrous applications
  • Alcohol-fueled engines
  • Natural gas engines
  • Experimental aircraft
  • Dyno and development testing
