APPLICATIONS AND TECHNICAL DETAILS

EGT in a Gasoline Engine: What It Actually Measures

EGT in a gasoline engine is a proxy for combustion efficiency and mixture ratio, not a direct measurement of either. The relationship between EGT and air-fuel ratio follows a predictable curve: richening the mixture from stoichiometric lowers EGT as excess fuel absorbs combustion heat, while leaning the mixture raises EGT.

Peak EGT occurs at or slightly lean of stoichiometric. Peak power, however, is produced at a richer mixture — typically around lambda 0.85 to 0.90 — meaning the maximum-power tune sits on the rich side of the EGT peak. Understanding where peak EGT occurs, and how current EGT compares to that point, is how tuners use EGT as a mixture indicator alongside or in place of a wideband oxygen sensor.

With a two-channel system, common configurations include front vs. rear cylinders on an inline engine or left vs. right bank on a V-engine.

Exposed Junction: Why Fuel Type Determines Probe Choice

The EGT-MP probe uses an exposed, ungrounded Type K thermocouple junction, placing the sensing element directly in the exhaust gas stream.

This design provides a 250 millisecond response time (time constant), allowing the probe to track combustion changes quickly enough to be used as a real-time feedback tool during tuning.

Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.

In gasoline engines running pump fuel or race fuel, exhaust chemistry is relatively clean, allowing exposed junction probes to operate reliably. In contrast, diesel exhaust and high-oil-consumption engines introduce contaminants that can degrade exposed junctions over time. In those cases, an enclosed-tip probe is the better choice.

Muffler Clamp Mounting for Thin-Wall Exhaust Systems

The EGT-MP uses a muffler clamp mounting system, eliminating the need for a threaded port or welded bung. Installation requires drilling a hole through the exhaust pipe, inserting the probe, and tightening the clamp to secure the assembly.

The default clamp fits pipe diameters from approximately 1.5" to 2.5", with additional sizes available for other exhaust configurations.

This mounting method is commonly used in kart racing, snowmobile exhaust systems, and retrofit installations where pipe wall thickness is insufficient for NPT threading.

Maximum probe insertion depth is 1.5 inches, and typical placement positions the sensing tip within the exhaust gas flow without excessive intrusion.

Compression Retention and Thermocouple Wiring

The probe is retained in the clamp using a compression-style interface that grips the sheath and holds it in position during thermal cycling.

All wiring from probe to gauge must be Type K thermocouple alloy throughout. Using copper wire introduces parasitic junctions that create temperature-dependent measurement errors. Only thermocouple-grade extension wire should be used for any additional cable length.
