About - HHMD-TM-82N Handheld EGT Kit
Portable Single-Channel Pyrometer with Exposed-Junction Probe
This kit pairs the HHMD-TM-82N handheld thermocouple thermometer with a 3/16" EGT-EP exposed-junction probe, compression fitting, and optional weld bung.
It provides a complete, portable exhaust temperature measurement solution powered by a 9V battery—no vehicle wiring required.
Why Use a Handheld EGT System
Most EGT systems are designed for permanent installation.
This handheld kit is intended for:
- Tuners working across multiple vehicles
- Engine builders performing diagnostics
- Dyno operators verifying combustion behavior
Install the probe, connect the meter, take readings, and move to the next vehicle.
HHMD-TM-82N Meter
Dual Display
- Primary display: live temperature
- Secondary display: MAX, MIN, AVG, or HOLD
Allows simultaneous monitoring without interrupting measurement.
Measurement Functions
- MAX — peak temperature capture
- MIN — baseline readings
- AVG — smoothed steady-state readings
- HOLD — freeze display
- T1-T2 — differential (2-channel version only)
Accuracy
- ±0.1% full scale + 0.7°C
Provides reliable resolution for tuning and diagnostics.
Power
- 9V battery
- ~250 hours typical runtime
EGT-EP Probe: Fast Response Design
The gasoline version uses the EGT-EP probe:
- Type K thermocouple
- 3/16" (0.187") Inconel sheath
- Exposed, ungrounded junction
Response Time
- 250 ms (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.
This fast response provides improved visibility of transient temperature changes during tuning.
Probe Specifications
- Range: -148 to 2372°F
- Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
- Cable: Stainless overbraid with Teflon-insulated conductors, 20 AWG
- Fitting: 316 stainless steel compression fitting
Wiring
Type K polarity must be maintained:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Diesel Option
For diesel applications, the kit includes an enclosed-junction probe instead of the exposed EGT-EP.
This improves durability in diesel exhaust environments.
Cable Length Options
- 6 ft
- 12 ft
- 25 ft
The probe cable provides the full working length—no separate extension wire required.
Applications
- Carburetor and EFI tuning
- Cylinder balance testing
- Turbocharger analysis
- Engine diagnostics
Summary
The HHMD handheld EGT kit provides a flexible, portable solution for exhaust temperature measurement.
- No permanent installation required
- Fast-response probe for tuning
- Accurate, repeatable data
- Ideal for multi-vehicle diagnostics
