About DPG-XR-2: 2-Channel Dual Digital Pyrometer Gauge — Gauge Only
The DPG-XR-2 is the gauge-only version of the dual-channel DPG-XR Series pyrometer—the same instrument used in TSC’s gas race, diesel, marine, and snowmobile kit configurations, sold here without probes, fittings, or installation hardware. It accepts any two Type K, J, T, or E thermocouples, fits a standard 52mm round panel cutout, operates on 9–28 VDC, and is made in the USA.
This listing is intended for builders and technicians who already have probes installed, are upgrading from an existing gauge to the DPG-XR platform, or are configuring a custom installation where probe selection, cable length, and hardware are sourced separately. If you need probes and installation hardware, the DPG-XR kit listings include a complete matched system.
Gauge Only vs. Complete Kit: When to Buy Which
Buy the Gauge Only (this listing) if:
- You have existing EGT or CHT probes already installed and wired
- You are replacing a failed or outdated gauge on an existing system
- You are sourcing a specific probe separately (custom length, configuration, or TSC probe already selected)
- You are building a custom instrument panel and specifying components individually
- You need a replacement gauge for an existing DPG-XR kit
Buy a Complete Kit if:
- You are starting from scratch with no probes or hardware
- You want a single purchase with matched probes, fittings, and wiring
- You want guaranteed probe–gauge compatibility verified by TSC
- You are installing in a specific application (gas race, diesel, marine, snowmobile) where matched hardware matters
Input Configuration: Thermocouples and Optional 0–5VDC
Thermocouple Type Selection
The DPG-XR-2 accepts Type K, J, T, and E thermocouples—the four most common standardized types used in motorsport, industrial, and laboratory applications.
The thermocouple type is selected through the gauge menu and applies to both channels simultaneously. Both inputs must use the same thermocouple type. Selecting the wrong type produces a temperature-dependent error that increases with distance from ambient.
| Type | Alloy Pair | Display Range (°F) | Display Range (°C) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K | Chromel / Alumel | -238 to +2282°F | -150 to +1250°C | EGT monitoring; general high-temperature use |
| J | Iron / Constantan | -148 to +2174°F | -100 to +1190°C | Legacy industrial systems |
| T | Copper / Constantan | -148 to +734°F | -100 to +390°C | Low-to-medium temperature measurement |
| E | Chromel / Constantan | -148 to +1742°F | -100 to +950°C | High-sensitivity mid-range measurement |
For all TSC EGT probes, Type K is the correct selection.
0–5VDC Analog Input (Factory Option)
When factory-enabled, each channel can accept a 0–5VDC input instead of a thermocouple. This allows the gauge to display pressure, position, lambda, or other sensor outputs scaled to voltage.
This option is not enabled by default and must be specified at the time of order.
High-Temperature Alarm: Setpoint and Relay Output
Each channel includes an independently programmable high-temperature alarm setpoint.
When the setpoint is exceeded:
- A visual alert appears on the display
- The internal relay closes
Settings are stored in non-volatile memory and retained after power loss.
Relay Output (2A Dry Contact)
The internal relay is a normally open dry contact rated at 2 amps. It acts as a switch and does not supply voltage.
Common uses:
- Audible alarm buzzer
- Cooling fan control (via external relay)
- Warning light activation
- Data logger trigger input
- Integration into engine safety or control circuits
Display, Programming, and Operation
LED Display
- 4-digit, 0.275" LED display
- 9 selectable colors (stored after power-off)
- High visibility in sunlight and low light
Front Panel Programming
Three front-panel buttons control:
- Thermocouple type
- °F / °C selection
- Display color
- Alarm setpoints
- Peak hold
- Temperature offset
No external programming tools are required.
Temperature Offset
Each channel includes an adjustable offset to compensate for installation differences.
Example:
If one probe reads consistently lower due to placement, an offset can correct the displayed value for accurate comparison.
Offsets apply to both display and alarm logic. They should only be used to correct installation differences—not to mask real temperature variation.
Peak Hold
The gauge continuously records the maximum temperature on each channel.
- Stored in non-volatile memory
- Retained after power-off
- Accessible via front panel controls
The gauge captures peaks continuously, regardless of display mode.
Physical Installation
Panel Mounting
- Standard 52mm (2-1/16") round cutout
- Fits common automotive gauge locations
- Gauge depth: 1.5" (38mm)
Verify clearance before installation.
Wiring
Power
- 9–28 VDC input
- Connect to switched ignition power
- Should not be connected to constant power (prevents battery drain)
Thermocouple Inputs
- Type K polarity:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Thermocouple polarity must be correct. Reversed polarity causes incorrect readings.
Use proper thermocouple extension wire when extending leads—do not use standard copper wire.
Relay Output
- Dry contact (no internal voltage)
- External device supplies its own power
- Observe 2A contact rating
Gauge Pod Options
Optional mounting pods:
- Fixed-angle dash mount
- Adjustable swivel mount
Both use standard 52mm mounting.
