About - EGT Digital PMD1XT Pyrometer Gauge + Probe Kit - Diesel Race Series DF
This kit pairs the PMD1XT digital pyrometer gauge with the EGT-DF enclosed-tip diesel EGT probe — a combination designed specifically for diesel and biodiesel exhaust monitoring where probe fouling and chemical corrosion are real operating concerns.
The enclosed-tip design protects the thermocouple junction from sulfur compounds, soot, and deposits that can degrade exposed-junction probes over time. Both components are made in the USA.
Why Diesel Exhaust Requires a Different Probe
Diesel exhaust presents a more chemically aggressive environment than gasoline exhaust.
Sulfur compounds and condensates can form during low-temperature operation. Over time, these can degrade exposed thermocouple junctions, leading to drift or failure.
The EGT-DF probe uses an enclosed junction design that significantly reduces this failure mode by isolating the sensing junction inside the Inconel sheath.
EGT-DF Probe Construction
Enclosed Junction
The thermocouple junction is sealed inside the Inconel 600 sheath and surrounded by MgO insulation.
This design:
- Protects the junction from direct exposure
- Improves durability in diesel environments
- Trades response speed for longevity
Response time:
- 550 ms (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.
Probe Geometry
- Diameter: 1/8" nominal (0.125")
- Max insertion depth: 1.35"
- Adjustable compression fitting allows positioning
Proper insertion ensures the probe tip is in the exhaust gas stream without contacting internal surfaces.
Materials
- Sheath: Inconel 600
- Insulation: MgO
- Compression fitting: 316 stainless steel
- Cable: Stainless overbraid with FEP insulation, 20 AWG
Choosing the Right EGT Probe
| Probe | Type | Response | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EGT-DF | Enclosed | 550 ms | Diesel / biodiesel |
| EGT-EP | Exposed | ~150 ms | Gasoline tuning |
| EGT-DP | Deep probe | ~150 ms | Gas engines |
| EGT-SW | Swaged | ~250 ms | Gas / intake |
For diesel applications, the enclosed-tip EGT-DF is the appropriate choice due to durability and resistance to fouling.
PMD1XT Gauge
The PMD1XT is a digital panel meter designed for thermocouple measurement.
- 4-digit LED display
- 1°F / 1°C resolution
- 0.5 second update rate
- ±0.2% of reading accuracy
The gauge supports multiple input types depending on configuration, and ships configured for Type K thermocouple use in this kit.
Alarm Relay
- 1A @ 30 VDC
- Programmable setpoint
- Non-volatile memory
Used for:
- Audible alarms
- Warning lights
- Control circuits
Peak Hold
Stores the highest recorded temperature for later review.
Optional Analog Output
Optional 0–5 VDC output provides a signal proportional to measured temperature for DAQ or ECU integration.
Wiring
Type K polarity must be observed:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Incorrect polarity results in inverted readings.
Installation Overview
Probe Location
- Pre-turbo: most accurate for engine protection
- Post-turbo: lower readings, slower response
Applications
- Diesel performance and racing
- Marine diesel engines
- Heavy-duty trucking
- Industrial diesel equipment
Summary
The PMD1XT + EGT-DF kit provides a durable, accurate solution for diesel exhaust temperature monitoring.
- Enclosed junction for long life
