About - PMD1XT Diesel Pusher Motorhome EGT Kit
Digital Pyrometer, Extended Cable, Enclosure, and Alarm
This kit is designed specifically for monitoring exhaust gas temperature on diesel pusher motorhomes, where the engine is located at the rear of the coach and the driver is positioned 20 to 40 feet away at the front.
It includes the PMD1XT digital pyrometer gauge, an EGT-DP enclosed-tip diesel probe, an aluminum enclosure, an audible alarm, a weld bung, and up to 70 feet of Type K thermocouple extension wire—providing a complete solution for long-distance sensor installations.
Why a Diesel Pusher Needs an EGT Gauge
Most motorhome dashboards do not include exhaust gas temperature.
EGT is one of the most direct indicators of engine thermal load, particularly during sustained climbs.
Under heavy load conditions—such as long mountain grades—EGT can rise significantly. Sustained temperatures above approximately 1250–1350°F (engine-dependent) can increase stress on engine components.
An EGT gauge with an alarm allows the driver to monitor this condition and respond early by reducing load, downshifting, or pausing the climb.
Long Cable Runs and Thermocouple Extension Wire
This kit addresses one of the primary challenges of motorhome installations: cable length.
Standard probe leads are typically 6 feet. Motorhome installations often require 25–50 feet or more.
The included extension wire is Type K thermocouple-grade wire, not standard copper wire.
Using standard wire introduces junction errors due to dissimilar metals. Type K extension wire maintains alloy continuity (Chromel/Alumel), preventing measurement error.
EGT-DP Probe: 3/16" Enclosed Design
The EGT-DP probe uses a 3/16" Inconel sheath with an enclosed, ungrounded junction.
This design:
- Protects the sensing junction
- Improves durability in diesel exhaust environments
- Provides long-term stability
The larger diameter increases mechanical robustness compared to smaller probes.
Response Time
- 1200 ms (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.
This response speed is appropriate for motorhome applications, where temperature changes occur over seconds rather than milliseconds.
Probe Specifications
- Type: Type K
- Range: -148 to 2372°F
- Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
- Diameter: 3/16" (0.187")
- Junction: Enclosed, ungrounded
- Cable: Stainless overbraid, Teflon-insulated, 20 AWG
- Fitting: 316 SS compression fitting
Wiring
Type K polarity must be maintained:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
Incorrect polarity results in inverted readings.
Installation Overview
Probe Location
- Pre-turbo (preferred for engine protection)
- Post-turbo (lower readings, trend monitoring)
Mounting
