MADE IN THE USA

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor is specifically designed for use in racing, tuning, and testing applications. Made in the USA from superior materials. The Exposed Tip sensing junction provides immediate response to dynamic temperature changes.

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Probe is capable of surviving extreme vibration and heat up to 2300 degrees F (1300 degrees C). The EGT probe will fit most internal combustion engine exhaust systems from approximately .750 inch diameter up to about 4 inch diameter with nominal installation modifications. The EGT probe is 0.187" diameter (4.75 mm) with a 3" (76.2 mm) straight shaft . An adjustable (316 Stainless Steel) 1/8" NPT compression fitting adapter is included. The EGT probe cable lead length is 6 feet (1.8 meters) or 12 feet (3.6 meters).

The probe cable is over-braided in stainless steel for heavy-duty abrasion resistance. The signal wires are FEP insulated. Designed to deliver high performance, high temperature measurements, reliably and consistently.

These high temperature sensors are the choice for professional racing teams, R&D test labs, and enthusiasts. The EGT probes can be used for many different applications, including Karts, Drag Racing, Formula 1, NASCAR, Off Road, Snowmobiles, Aviation, and Marine Racing.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please confirm with your instrument manufacturer that the instrument is compatible with a Type K thermocouple sensor.

Why 1/4" Is the Correct Diameter for Extreme Duty EGT Applications

Probe diameter selection in EGT measurement involves a direct tradeoff between structural durability and exhaust system flow disruption. Larger probes are more resistant to vibration fatigue and gas-dynamic bending forces; smaller probes create less backpressure and intrude less on exhaust flow. The 1/4" EGT-IP sits at the large end of the standard motorsports probe range, and that positioning is intentional.

High-power engines — supercharged gasoline, high-boost turbocharged, and large-displacement naturally aspirated — produce exhaust conditions that will fatigue a 1/8" probe over time and stress a 3/16" probe under sustained high-velocity gas loading. The 1/4" body provides additional stiffness and durability margin for these environments.

150-Millisecond Response: Exposed Tip Physics

The EGT-IP uses an exposed, ungrounded Type K junction, allowing direct contact between the sensing wires and the exhaust gas stream.

Because there is no sheath material between the junction and the gas, thermal mass is minimized and response time is very fast — approximately 150 milliseconds (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.

This fast response is important in gasoline engines where mixture changes produce rapid EGT fluctuations. Slower enclosed-tip probes can smooth or average these transient events, reducing visibility into short-duration temperature spikes.

Applications: Pre-Turbo Placement and High-Velocity Exhaust

The 1/4" EGT-IP is well suited for pre-turbocharger probe placement in high-boost gasoline applications. Pre-turbo exhaust gas is at the highest temperature and velocity in the system, and the probe is exposed to full gas-dynamic loading in this location.

The larger sheath diameter improves resistance to bending and fatigue at the mounting interface under sustained high-velocity flow. For post-turbo applications where gas velocity is lower, smaller diameter probes may be sufficient.

The IP series is also commonly used in aviation piston engine EGT monitoring, where durability and reliability are prioritized.

Exposed Tip and Fuel Compatibility

The exposed junction design is intended for clean-burning fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, alcohol blends, and nitrous-assisted systems. It is not recommended for diesel or biodiesel applications, where particulate matter and sulfur compounds can degrade the exposed thermocouple junction.

For diesel applications requiring a 1/4" diameter probe, an enclosed-tip design is preferred.

Compression Fitting and Probe Positioning

Each probe includes a 316 stainless steel adjustable compression fitting with 1/8"-27 NPT threads.

Insertion depth should place the tip within the exhaust gas stream without exceeding the maximum insertion depth of 1.5 inches
Typical positioning places the junction within the core flow region, depending on pipe diameter and application.

The larger probe diameter results in a slightly larger compression fitting, so clearance around the mounting location should be confirmed in tight installations.
