About DPG-XR Marine Series: 2-Channel Dual EGT Pyrometer Gauge + Probe Kit

The Marine Series DPG-XR kit is purpose-built for inboard and stern-drive engine installations where the engine compartment and the helm station are separated by distances that exceed the reach of standard probe cables.

The kit includes two EGT probes with 6-foot leads, a dual-channel digital pyrometer gauge, stainless steel weld bungs, an audible alarm buzzer, and FEP-insulated thermocouple extension wire in lengths from 10 to 100 feet. This allows temperature signals to be routed from a bilge-mounted engine to a console-mounted gauge without splicing or field-fabricating extension wiring.

Probe type is selected at checkout:

  • EP Series (gasoline) — exposed junction for fast response
  • DP Series (diesel) — sheathed junction for durability

Kit Contents

  • DPG-XR Series 2-Channel Digital Pyrometer Gauge (1)
  • EGT Probes, 3/16" diameter, 6 ft cable (2) — EP or DP
  • 316 SS adjustable compression fittings, 1/8"-27 NPT male (2)
  • 316 SS weld bung adapters, 1/8" NPT female (2)
  • FEP-insulated thermocouple extension wire (2 runs)
  • Thermocouple connectors (2 sets)
  • Silicone connector boots (4)
  • Audible piezo alarm buzzer (1)

Thermocouple Extension Wire — Why It Matters

Thermocouples generate voltage based on temperature differences between junctions. Introducing standard copper wire into a Type K circuit creates additional thermoelectric junctions, which introduce measurement error.

Matched Type K extension wire (Chromel/Alumel) ensures signal accuracy by maintaining consistent thermoelectric behavior across the circuit.

The included FEP-insulated extension wire is:

  • Moisture-resistant
  • Chemically stable
  • Suitable for marine environments

Gasoline vs Diesel Probe Selection

EP Series Probe (Gasoline Option)

The EP Series probe uses an exposed, ungrounded junction for fast response to exhaust gas temperature changes.

Specifications (Verified)

  • Type: K
  • Range: -148 to 2372°F (-100 to 1300°C)
  • Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
  • Diameter: 3/16"
  • Junction: Exposed, ungrounded
  • Response Time: 250 ms (time constant)
  • Cable: PTFE insulated, SS over-braid, 20 AWG
  • Fitting: 316 SS double ferrule, 1/8"-27 NPT

DP Series Probe (Diesel Option)

The DP Series probe uses an enclosed, ungrounded junction for maximum durability in harsh exhaust environments.

Specifications (Verified)

  • Type: K
  • Range: -148 to 2372°F (-100 to 1300°C)
  • Accuracy: ±0.4% of reading
  • Diameter: 3/16"
  • Junction: Enclosed, ungrounded
  • Response Time: 1200 ms (time constant)
  • Cable: PTFE insulated, SS over-braid, 20 AWG
  • Fitting: 316 SS compression fitting, 1/8"-27 NPT

Response Time Explained

Response time is defined as the time required for the probe to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change. Multiple time constants are required to approach full stabilization.

  • EP probe: faster response, better for dynamic tuning
  • DP probe: slower response, more stable and durable

Marine Installation Considerations

Distance

Marine installations often require long cable runs (10–100 ft). This kit eliminates the need for splicing, preserving measurement accuracy.

Environment

Marine environments expose wiring to:

  • Moisture
  • Salt air
  • Fuel vapor
  • Vibration

FEP insulation and sealed connectors ensure long-term durability.

Probe Placement Guidelines

  • Install 2–4 inches from exhaust port
  • Place before water injection (wet exhaust systems)
  • Position tip near center of gas stream
  • Avoid pipe wall contact

Cable Routing

  • Keep cables away from exhaust heat
  • Use shielding where necessary
  • Allow slack for movement
  • Route through protected paths

DPG-XR Gauge Features

  • Dual-channel input
  • Sequential display
  • 4-digit LED (9 colors)
  • Peak hold
  • Programmable alarm (2A relay)
  • Per-channel offset
  • 9–28 VDC operation
  • IP61 front rating

Audible Alarm

Included standard for marine use.

  • 75 dB output
  • Provides critical real-time warning
  • Helps detect overtemp without constant gauge monitoring

Applications

  • Gasoline inboards
  • Diesel inboards
  • Stern-drive systems
  • Commercial vessels
  • Marine generators

Summary

The DPG-XR Marine Series kit provides a complete, accurate, and reliable EGT monitoring solution for marine environments.

  • EP probes: fast response for gasoline tuning
  • DP probes: durability for diesel applications
  • Matched extension wiring ensures signal integrity
  • Marine-grade materials ensure long-term reliability
