MADE IN THE USA
The Muffler Clamp EGT probe is designed for EGT applications that require mounting without a weld bung and compression fitting. The Muffler Clamp EGT probe is 0.125 diameter (3.18 mm) and includes an adjustable metal clamp mounting strap. The EGT probe cable lead length is 6 feet (2 meters). The probe has a 1.5" straight sheath to accommodate tight mounting locations.
The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT Probe) is specifically designed for use in racing, tuning, and testing applications. Our probes are made in the USA from superior materials, designed to withstand rugged racing conditions. The Exposed Tip sensing junction provides immediate response to dynamic temperature changes.
Drill hole in header. Insert the EGT probe through the drilled hole and tighten the Muffler Clamp. The EGT probe can be inserted to the required depth and secured by locking the supplied compression fitting.
The probe cable is over-braided in stainless steel for heavy-duty abrasion resistance. The signal wires are FEP insulated. Designed to deliver high performance, high temperature measurements, reliably and consistently.
The high temperature sensors of choice for professional racing teams, R&D test labs, and Enthusiasts. The EGT probes can be used for many different applications, including… but not limited to…Karts, Drag Racing, Formula 1, NASCAR, Off Road, Snowmobiles, and Boat Racing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please confirm with your instrument manufacturer that the instrument is compatible with a Type K thermocouple sensor.
Our probes are made from the highest quality materials and designed for withstanding extreme environments.

APPLICATIONS AND TECHNICAL DETAILS
Integrated vs. Separate Mounting: The EGT-EA Clamp-Body Design
The EGT-EA differs from other Sensor Connection EGT probes in a fundamental way: the muffler clamp is permanently integrated into the probe body rather than supplied as a separate component. This eliminates the assembly step of threading the probe through a clamp and simplifies installation, particularly in applications where a single-piece solution is preferred.
The probe uses a 1/8" diameter sheath, making it suitable for smaller exhaust systems where minimal flow disruption is important. The 1.5" straight shaft is shorter than most EGT probes in the product line — a deliberate design choice for tight-clearance mounting locations where a longer probe would interfere with surrounding components.
1.5" Straight Shaft: What the Shorter Length Means
The 1.5" sheath length directly limits insertion depth. The probe tip cannot be placed more than approximately 0.65 inches into the exhaust flow, accounting for the integrated clamp at the pipe wall.
This geometry is appropriate for small-diameter exhaust pipes, typically in the 0.75" to 2" range, where a longer probe would extend too far into the pipe or approach the opposite wall. In larger exhaust systems where deeper insertion is preferred, adjustable-depth probe designs are more appropriate.
The shorter shaft also reduces unsupported length at the pipe interface, improving resistance to vibration-induced fatigue in continuous-duty applications.
Enclosed Tip for Broad Fuel Compatibility
The EGT-EA uses an enclosed, ungrounded Type K thermocouple junction, protecting the sensing element from direct exposure to the exhaust stream.
This enclosed design improves durability and makes the probe suitable for use with a wide range of fuel types, including gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, natural gas, and alcohol blends. The tradeoff is a slower response compared to exposed-junction probes, with a response time of approximately 550 milliseconds (time constant).
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change.
Installation: Drill-and-Clamp Without Threading
Installation requires drilling a hole slightly larger than the 1/8" probe diameter through the exhaust pipe wall, inserting the probe to the desired depth, and tightening the integrated clamp around the pipe exterior.
No NPT tap or weld bung is required, making this a practical solution for field installation without specialized tools. The clamp secures the probe using a stainless band and compression interface, holding the probe at the selected insertion depth.
Pipe wall thickness should be sufficient to support the clamp without deformation. In thin-wall applications, reinforcement may be required. Clamp tension should be checked after the first heat cycle, as thermal expansion can slightly change clamping force.
Cable and Electrical Considerations
The probe includes a 6-foot Type K thermocouple cable constructed with 20 AWG stranded conductors, FEP insulation, and stainless steel overbraid.
Any extension beyond this length must use Type K thermocouple extension wire. Using copper wire introduces parasitic junctions that generate measurement error.
Type K polarity must be maintained:
- Yellow = Positive (+)
- Red = Negative (–)
