About DPG-XR Snowmobile Series: 2-Channel Dual EGT Pyrometer Gauge + Probe Kit
This kit pairs two EGT-2S Series two-stroke EGT probes with a DPG-XR dual-channel digital pyrometer gauge configured specifically for snowmobile use.
Three features distinguish this kit from other DPG-XR configurations:
- 1/8" diameter probes for small two-stroke exhaust geometry
- IP65-rated gauge face for snow, water, and debris exposure
- -40°F (-40°C) operating capability for cold-weather operation
Both the gauge and probes are made in the USA.
Kit Contents
- DPG-XR Series 2-Channel Digital Pyrometer Gauge (IP65, -40°F rated)
- EGT-2S Series 2-Stroke EGT Probes, 1/8" diameter, enclosed junction (2)
- 316 SS adjustable compression fittings, 1/8"-27 NPT male (2)
- Weld bungs (optional)
- Audible alarm buzzer (optional)
EGT in Two-Stroke Engines
EGT monitoring in a two-stroke engine is primarily a protection tool, not just a tuning reference.
Because lubrication depends on fuel mixture, a lean condition simultaneously:
- Raises combustion temperature
- Reduces lubrication
This creates a narrow safe operating window—often only 100–200°F wide—where performance and engine safety overlap.
EGT provides real-time feedback on where the engine is operating within that window.
EGT-2S Probe Design
1/8" Diameter for Two-Stroke Exhaust Systems
Two-stroke exhaust systems use smaller-diameter runners and expansion chambers. A larger probe can represent a significant portion of the available flow area.
The 1/8" probe minimizes flow disruption while maintaining accurate measurement.
Enclosed Anti-Fouling Junction
The EGT-2S probe uses an enclosed, ungrounded junction with MgO insulation.
This design:
- Prevents direct exposure to oil-laden exhaust gases
- Reduces buildup on the sensing junction
- Maintains long-term measurement stability
This is particularly important in two-stroke engines, where oil and carbon deposits are present in the exhaust stream.
Thin-Wall Inconel Sheath
The probe uses a 0.015" wall Inconel sheath, minimizing thermal mass while protecting the sensing element.
This provides:
- Faster response than heavy industrial probes
- Improved durability vs exposed junction designs
Response Time
- 550 ms (time constant)
Response time is defined as the time required to reach 63.2% of a step temperature change. Multiple time constants are required for full stabilization.
This response is optimized for two-stroke applications where temperature changes occur over seconds rather than instantaneous spikes.

Snowmobile Electrical Systems (AC vs DC)
Many snowmobiles use stator-based AC power systems rather than regulated DC systems.
The DPG-XR requires DC input (9–28 VDC).
For AC systems:
- A bridge rectifier must be used
- Converts AC to usable DC
- Ensures stable gauge operation
Probe Placement Guidelines
- Install 2–4 inches from exhaust port
- Place in header section of expansion chamber
- Avoid diverging cone or stinger
- Position tip near center of exhaust flow
Installation Considerations
- Use stainless bungs for corrosion resistance
- Avoid overheating thin-wall pipes during welding
- Route cables away from hot surfaces
- Secure wiring to prevent vibration damage
Applications
- Performance trail sleds (carbureted two-stroke)
- Mountain / high-altitude riding
- Two-stroke drag racing
- Performance tuning and diagnostics
Summary
The DPG-XR Snowmobile Series kit provides a purpose-built EGT monitoring solution for two-stroke engines.
- 1/8" probe fits small exhaust geometry
- Enclosed junction resists fouling
- IP65 gauge withstands harsh conditions
